The Civil War Road:  Gettysburg & Antietam

June 25-29, 2025
 Gettysburg Hotel
1 Lincoln Square
Gettysburg, PA 17325

The Civil War tore America apart over 150 years ago. General Robert E. Lee’s 1862 - 63 northern incursions were critical events culminating in the turning point that became known as the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1 - 3, 1863. The Yale Club of Washington, DC invites you for a five-day, four-night schedule of social events, meals, lectures, a special-access visit to a private collection, and battlefield tours of Antietam and Gettysburg from June 25 - 29, 2025. Join fellow Yalies, family and friends and stay at the historic Hotel Gettysburg.

The tour is bivouacked at the Gettysburg Hotel, 1 Lincoln Square, Gettysburg, PA 17325. The tour starts with a kick-off welcome reception, dinner, and introductory lecture. Daily activities will include illustrated talks, in-depth tours, and visits to each specific day's battlefield events. View or download the detailed itinerary HERE.

Our trip will include battlefield excursions on three successive days, mirroring the pivotal battles of Lee’s Northern advances and retreats. Mornings begin with private illustrated lectures by Dr. Brian Jordan, Yale PhD ’13, and Professor of U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction at Sam Houston University. Dr. Jordan will describe context, implications, and meanings of each of the battles that will be followed by guided battlefield tours. We will visit Antietam, Antietam's Bloody Lane and Cornfield (infamous for its 23,000 casualties), and Gettysburg with Chamberlain’s decisive bayonet charge at Little Round Top and the folly and devastation of the Peach Orchard and Wheatfield. Weather and time permitting, there may be a visit to (and optional walk of) the route of Pickett’s Charge in what became known as the Confederacy’s High Water Mark. Not-to-be missed highlights will be a visit to the Gettysburg National Military Park and Visitor Center and National Civil War Museum. At the Visitor Center you will view Paul Philippoteaux's monumental 337-foot-wide painting The Battle of Gettysburg (see the reproduction in this message's header) displayed in the round and with a special sound and light presentation.  The tour may also gain entry to private collections not on public display at the National Civil War Museum.

The activity level for this tour is moderately active. All participants should be in good health and capable of walking, sometimes over steep or rough terrain, and climbing stairs.
Yale affiliation is not necessary to join us on this trip.
