The Yale Club invites you to join the Yale Alumni Club of Maryland at a performance of a classic Greek tragedy, The Oresteia, by the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company in Baltimore.

Rarely performed in its entirety, the original trilogy (written in the 5th century BCE) was freely adapted by the prolific writer, Ellen McLaughlin in 2019. The three plays, Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Eumenides are condensed into one lyrically written, emotionally stirring experience that still retains all the suspense and edge of the three works. The Oresteia is a vibrant and excitingly modern new adaptation. Aeschylus's elemental tale focuses on the complex cycle of vengeance within the family of Clytemnestra and Agamemnon. In a world where political power and the ancient forces of destiny collide, The Oresteia asks if justice is even possible. A play about democracy from the beginning of democracy. Due to its violent subject matter, the play would probably not be suitable for younger children.

Cast members frequently make themselves available to chat with the audience following performances.  Attendees may decide to have dinner in the nearby Harbor East area after the play. 

The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company (CSC) is the leading classic theater company in Maryland, offering vibrant performances that breathe new life into Shakespeare and other classic plays. The CSC has transformed a 19th-century landmark in downtown Baltimore into an intimate theater for the classics. It creatively reuses the former Mercantile Deposit and Trust Company bank building. Inside, visitors will see the original columns and vault doors, ornately decorated ceiling, and a catwalk used by bank guards who patrolled the trust’s perimeter. Built like a fortress with double walls and iron window grates, the Mercantile building survived Baltimore’s Great Fire of 1904.
