Professor Paul Sullivan, PhD Yale, teaches courses on climate change and energy and on the Middle East in the Yale Alumni College. In this talk he will be interviewed by Yale Club of Washington, DC Board member, Robert Reisner, on the connection that he makes in his talk between the topics of energy, climate, the Middle East, and Ukraine. He will also explore the way in which the war in Ukraine is already having wide ranging impacts and is likely to shape geopolitics and geo-economics for some time to come.

The speaker, an expert on energy, climate, and the Middle East, will talk about the way in which the early weeks of the war in Ukraine can already be seen to be impacting far ranging geopolitical affairs. In the course that he teaches at the Yale Alumni College, for example, Prof. Sullivan talks about the way in which the war can be seen to be impacting food prices and food stability in key Middle Eastern markets and places these observations in an historical context to gauge their significance. The war in Ukraine has also disturbed energy markets and energy geopolitics, including US relations with the major oil producers in the Middle East. Professor Sullivan will be interviewed by Yale Club of Washington board member, Robert Reisner, and will take questions at the end of his presentation. About the Speaker

Dr. Paul Sullivan is a nonresident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Global Energy Center and a senior research associate at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies among other duties and posts. He was a full professor at the National Defense University (USA) for over 22 years where he ran the Energy Industry Study, taught Industry Analytics, Economics of National Security, and other electives and regional studies related to the MENA region, the Islamic world, Economic Warfare, and other timely issues. As part of his NDU duties, he ran energy field studies in the US, Asia, Australia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and the EU. He taught at Georgetown, The American University in Cairo, and Yale. He is teaching a course on “Climate Change and Energy Transitions” for the Yale Alumni College.

He has given talks on five continents at places as varied as Windsor Castle, Ditchley Park, and The Defense College of Mongolia, among others. His present research interests include the energy-resilience nexus, economic and resource aspects of human security, energy transitions, US-MENA relations, EU energy security, EU-Russian energy relations, Arctic energy issues, US-MENA-Japan relations, the energy-water-food nexus, and other topics. He has almost three decades of experience with and in the MENA region and considerable experience in other parts of the world, including the EU, gathered over a career of over 40 years He holds a BA from Brandeis University (Summa Cum Laude), along with MA, MPhil, and PhD degrees from Yale University. He was part of MIT’s Seminar XXI’s class of 2006. He has a certificate of completion in Ethnoarchaeology from a field study in Barunga, Australia, run by Flinders University in Australia.
