Representations of Latin America and Spain Through Film with Professor Margherita Tortora

Thursday, October 7, 2021

6:30-7:30pm

This meeting will be conducted on Zoom.  Instructions will be provided upon registration

Please join us for an evening of Latin American and Spanish film! Yale Professor Margherita Tortora will join us for a conversation about films in Spanish and their use as a vehicle to immerse audiences into different and unfamiliar points of view.

She will provide a brief overview of some of the themes and topics explored by independent filmmakers, and share an invitation to watch new productions during the upcoming Latino and Iberian Film Festival at Yale during November of 2021.

An excellent documentary that Professor Tortora recommends everyone watch before the talk is 500 Years by Pamela Yates and Paco de Onís. It is a portrayal of an endemic problem that affects all former Spanish colonies. Here is the trailer. You can watch the whole film on Kanopy here (You can get a free Kanopy streaming subscription through most public libraries in the DC region).

If you want to learn more about Spanish-language films ahead of the event, Prof Tortora recommends:

  • The documentary Franco on Trial  by Lucía Palacios and Dietmar Post  (for rent on Amazon Prime)
  • Los Olvidados by Luis Buñuel (you can see the whole movie here
  • Amores Perros by Alejandro González Iñárritu (on Amazon Prime)
  • The short Now by Santiago Alvarez here
  • XXY by Lucía Puenzo (also on Amazon Prime)
