In honor of Native American Heritage Month, the Yale Club of Washington, DC invites you to a virtual event about Yale’s first Native American Alum: Henry Roe Cloud, who graduated with a BA in psychology and philosophy in 1910, and earned an MA in anthropology from Yale in 1914. Our speakers are Professor Renya Ramirez, Cloud’s granddaughter and a professor of anthropology at UC Santa Cruz, and Dr. Ravi Goel ’93, who donated a collection of documents, photos and manuscripts about Cloud to Yale.

About the Speakers

Dr. Renya Ramirez (Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska) is a Professor of Anthropology at UC Santa Cruz and is the author of two books, Standing Up to Colonial Power: the Lives of Henry Roe and Elizabeth Bender Cloud and Native Hubs: Culture, Community and Belonging in Silicon Valley and Beyond. Her research interests include Native feminisms, documentary film, settler colonialism, diaspora, transnationalism, urban Native Americans, gendered citizenships, critical mission studies, and family/tribal history. She is working on a third book about the Native women of the Alcatraz occupation, including her mother, Woesha Cloud North, and finishing a 60-minute film documentary about her grandfather, Henry Roe Cloud.

Ravi Goel '93 collects historical documents and rare books. He has donated documents to the Yale University Library related to Yale presidents, faculty, and graduates from the early 1700s to present day. Highlights include documents related to Yale’s first student (Jacob Heminway 1704), first Chinese student (Yung Wing 1854), and first Native American student (Henry Roe Cloud 1910, MA 1914).  A collection at the Irving S. Gilmore Music Library includes original music compositions by one-time child prodigy and Yale School of Music alumnus Reuven Kosakoff.  He has also donated manuscripts to the Beinecke Library, Amherst College Library, Princeton University Library, Dickinson College Library, and Forest History Society.
